Inexpressible Horror on Van Wyck Expressway

Early on July 22nd, a 2008 Mercedes Benz SUV was speeding along Van Wyck Expressway when it sped through two red lights, swerved to miss a vehicle, and hit a concrete pillar head-on. After hitting the pillar, the SUV somersaulted through the air and burst into flames. The luxury vehicle was reduce to a pile of twisted metal, and three dead women and two dead children – the driver and two of the passengers survived and are being treated at a local hospital.

As of yet, authorities do not know why the driver was speeding or why she struck the pillar. Some say that this is one of the worst single accidents they’ve seen in years, and many wonder if it could have been avoided.

Tips on how to prevent car accidents:

  1. Keep your eyes on the road. Most people get into accidents because they are distracted in conversations with passengers.
  2. Keep a watchful eye on cars in front of you. Be extra alert when crossing a major intersection in the streets of New York and surrounding Cities.
  3. Slow down and take the time to both ways even the light is green before entering a busy intersection.
  4. Before changing lanes, check your blind spots. Lots motorcycle and bicycle accidents in New York are a result of people failing to check blind spots. Consider buying a blind spot mirror that may help with preventing these types of accidents
  5. Use your signal lights when changing lanes. Signal lights are there to help alert other car drivers that you are making a move so use them!
  6. Drive slower than the speed limit when making turns or driving on steep roadways. The old quote “speed kills” is a reality so slow down so you can arrive home in one piece.
  7. Turn down the music. Research indicates that people who listen to loud music while driving are more distracted with concentrating on the wheel. Do your best to lower the volume of you iPod, stereo, CD, or MP3 player.
