New York Motor Vehicle Accidents and Statistics

Stats and Facts Regarding Vehicle Accidents In The Big Apple

Most people are terrified of flying, while they would not hesitate to travel by motor vehicle. Surprisingly, plane travel is safer than car travel. In 2008, there were only 20 plane accidents with United States commercial carriers, and five resulted in serious injuries. There were no fatalities.

On the other hand, the National Safety Council indicates there is a 1 in 415 chance of dying as the occupant of a car. Also, there is a 1 in 108 chance of dying in a motor vehicle accident. These statistics are alarming, especially considering there is only a 1 in 126,158 chance of being killed by lightning.

In 2009, The United States Census Bureau reports there were 10.8 million motor vehicle accidents in this country. Of this number, 33,800 fatalities occurred. The state of New York had 1,156 fatalities due to motor vehicle accidents in that same year. The Centers for Disease Control reports that in 2005, deaths from car accidents resulted in a $41 billion financial cost to the country, with medical expenses and time away from work. New York car accidents cost the state $1.33 billion in 2005.

The emotional cost to families and victims is unimaginable.

Motor vehicle accidents occur almost every day in NYC. In March, a couple expecting a baby were killed in a car crash by a hit and run driver. The baby, a boy, was delivered via cesarean section after his mother’s death. He died a short time later, due to his injuries received in the crash. This past May, a driver who killed a person in a motor vehicle accident in Brooklyn was charged with manslaughter, DWI/DUI, reckless driving, and criminally negligent homicide.

What Are The Most Common Injuries Suffered In A Motor Vehicle Accident?

A car crash can result in a multitude of injuries, including:

  • Bone fractures
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Internal bleeding
  • Paralysis
  • Organ damage
  • Fatality

Even when the injuries receive medical attention, they do not all necessarily heal completely. The medical expenses in the wake of a car crash can be expensive and if the victims can no longer work, the financial burden will be devastating.

Victims of car crashes may require long-term medical treatment and financial support for themselves and their families so they can concentrate on the rehabilitation process.
