Manhattan Pedestrians Injured & Killed

Posted in Bicycle Accidents,Pedestrian accidents on December 13, 2011

Two pedestrians were hit, one fatally, within hours of each other in Manhattan on Friday, December 9, 2011.  The first accident occurred on West 57th Street and 10th Avenue when a 58-year-old man was hit by a motorcycle.

The man whose identity has not been released pending notification of family was taken to Roosevelt Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:00 a.m.  The driver of the motorcycle, a  22-year-old male, suffered head injuries in the accident.  His injuries are not life-threatening.

About two hours later, another pedestrian was struck by a van at West 44th Street and 8th Avenue.  He was also taken to Roosevelt Hospital and was in serious condition.  The driver of the van left the scene and the police are searching for him.

Key reasons why pedestrian accidents occur:

  • Driver’s vision is obstructed
  • Driver is in a hurry or driving too fast
  • Driver is distracted by being on their cell phone
  • Driver is texting instead of paying attention
  • Driver is under the influence (alcohol or drugs)
  • Driver fails to allow for adequate braking distance
  • Driver fails to pay attention to crosswalk signal light

New York City pedestrians need to be alert at all times to avoid being hit by car drivers who may be distracted, driving recklessly, or careless. Unfortunately, crosswalk injuries are common occurrences in the Big Apple that can be prevented if we take heed in practicing the tips listed below:

Best practices that help prevent pedestrian accidents in New City crosswalks:

  1. Pay close attention before you step into the crosswalk.
  2. Don’t assume that having the right of way means that you are safe. Watch for oncoming vehicles and traffic.
  3. Avoid distractions. If you are on the phone, put the person on hold for a few seconds.
  4. Remain in the crosswalk. Don’t go outsides the lines because it makes you harder to be seen.
