The History of Harlem in New York, NY

The Harlem area was first settled by the Dutch in 1639. They called it Nieuw Haarlem after a city in Holland. When the British invaded in 1664, they changed the name to Harlem. It was mainly an agricultural area for many years.

In 1880, when the New York Elevated Railroad was extended to Harlem, apartment buildings started springing up all over Harlem. Italian and Jewish immigrants moved there in large numbers to escape the crowdedness of the Lower East Side. Later Puerto Ricans began arriving and by 1940 their section of the neighborhood was known as “Spanish Harlem.”

In the 1920s and 1930s many Black Americans started to move to Harlem as well. Their arrival launched a renaissance of art and music in the area; Harlem became the center of Jazz and Blues. The famous Apollo Theater and Cotton Club are where musicians like Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Cab Calloway made their names.

After the depression, Harlem went into an extended period of decline until the 1990s. At that point, Harlem underwent a resurgence accompanied by a decrease in crime and an increase in business development.

However, New York has complicated insurance laws, which can make getting compensation difficult. The Law Offices of Jay S. Knispel can guide you through the process and help you get the money you deserve.

Construction Accidents

Harlem seems to have almost endless construction. No matter how many precautions are taken, construction accidents in Harlem will happen. If you or a loved one was injured on a construction site, give us a call. We’ll help you file for workers’ compensation or any other personal injury claim that is appropriate.

Motorcycle Accidents

Were you in a motorcycle accident in Harlem? Unfortunately, these accidents can result in very serious injuries. You’ll want an experienced lawyer on your side; motorcycle drivers are often assumed to be at fault when an accident occurs. We’ll make sure the facts are presented fairly and that you get the compensation you are entitled to after the crash.

Slip & Fall

Property and business owners are supposed to keep their premises safe for guests. If you are injured in a slip and fall at a store or other place of business in Harlem, it’s imperative to get legal representation right away. The sooner you act, the sooner evidence that is crucial to your case can be collected.

Truck Accidents

Our economy relies on truckers and trucks. But when an accident occurs, passenger vehicles are no match for these large, heavy vehicles. It’s usually the occupants of the vehicles that suffer the most severe injuries. If you’ve been in a truck accident, our attorneys can help you hold the truck driver and trucking company responsible.

Wrongful Death

Are you a Harlem resident who has lost a loved one due to the negligence of another party? You might be able to pursue a wrongful death case against the responsible party. It can be a tough but necessary process to get compensation — and justice — after your tragic loss.

Damages Available in Harlem Personal Injury Cases

Damages in personal injury cases include compensation for financial expenses as well as compensation for a person’s pain and suffering. The former are known as economic damages. The latter are called non-economic damages.

Typically damages include:

A personal injury lawyer will do a thorough examination of your damages to make sure you get everything that you are entitled to recover.

What Does It Cost to Hire a Personal Injury Lawyer in Manhattan?

Everyone knows legal fees can be expensive. However, personal injury lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. This means you don’t have to worry about billable hours. Instead, the attorney will get a percentage of what you recover.  This percentage is typically anywhere between 33 and 40%.

Statute of Limitations in New York Personal Injury Cases

If you have been injured in an accident in New York state, you typically have three years from the date of the accident to file a lawsuit. There are exceptions in certain circumstances.

It’s smart to consult with a personal injury lawyer as soon as possible to talk through the specific facts of your case. If you don’t file a  lawsuit in time, you could lose the opportunity to recover anything.
